We are interested in a wide variety of volunteers. This is a rough overview of what we’re currently looking for. If you’re interested in any of this, please join the Discord. There’s something for everyone here, regardless of your modding experience. Modding is a skill that builds over time. Think of it as compound knowledge. If you’re new, start small and gradually take on bigger projects as you gain confidence. You won’t be building a city or scripting a full questline in your first mod, trust me. Some of our founders started as volunteers just like you, contributing in small ways. Over time, they grew into leaders in their fields and helped shape Genesis as a whole. Take your time, ask questions, and enjoy the process!
Modding requires both patience and passion. Never be afraid to ask questions, and don’t feel bad if something doesn’t click right away, we’ve all been there. If the work ever feels overwhelming, remember that you can step away at any time. Over the past year, we’ve had countless volunteers come and go, and every single contribution, no matter how small, has been appreciated. Your effort matters. You can find basic tutorials and resources for many of the categories below on this page.
Testers
If you aren’t interested in modding, we occasionally have a need for testers. You can acquire the Tester role from the #Links-and-Roles channel in the Discord. I want to make it clear that this is not a role you get just to be able to play new content early, as some people originally assumed it was. It is a role to test individual features/bug fixes and report feedback to me directly. As of writing this, we have 120 people with the Tester role in the Discord, and yet the past couple times I’ve @ed them, no one has helped out. It’s safe to say that this role is in demand.
3D Modeling
The biggest misconception we often see is that users link us a 3D model and expect it to be in Genesis in the next update. A 3D model is often 10% of the work involved depending on the intent of it. Starfield has it’s own unique model file type called NIF. It is different format from the NIFs you see in Skyrim and Fallout modding too. We have to use a third party plugin called Nifskope to port models into Starfield. It’s a very tricky process to get right and a very small amount of people in the modding scene are experienced. Many new modders that have tried their hand at it have given up. We are in a dire need of porters, not models. In the Discord, you’ll find a spreadsheet with a list of models we have requested to be ported, as well as a tutorial. You are also free to simply port in whatever you want too of course (like an armor).
Textures
One of the most plentiful and easiest volunteer task to do is retexturing English letters into the Aurebesh using a downloaded font. Some people do their designs and even give me descriptions/renames of the item they re-textured when it applies. For example, a can of beans may be labeled as a can of bantha or something in Aurebesh after the retexture. It’s very cool and easy way to get your work added into Genesis. I manage this myself and simply send you files to re-texture. This is all done in “Aurebeshifying Textures” channel in the Discord.
If you’re looking for something a bit more advanced, we have a few low resolution Star Wars assets in the game that could use some re-texturing, and even some blank models from time to time. Contact me if you’re interested in that 😀
Standalone Locations
If you are interested in being a Starfield modder that contributes to Genesis, this is the place for you. There are thousands of planets in Starfield. There is literally an infinite playground for you create a location or even convert an entire planet if you’re ambitious. Pick a vanilla system and a vanilla planet and go crazy with it. The original biome or characteristics of the planet do not matter as you can change those too. Just do some research and make sure there are no quests connected to it. To create a unique location, follow this YouTube video guide and do the method at 8:40. Once you create a landing marker, xmarker, and map marker and verify that you can visit the location ingame, the fun part starts. You have a wide variety of assets at your disposal. Many vanilla assets fit the Star Wars aesthetic, but there are countless Star Wars assets too from mods like Coruscant, Tatooine, Kestro City, or prop replacers. This is where 3D modeling comes in too, as you can port in assets and directly use them in your location too.
Funny enough, the person that made Mos Eisley (Fox) was a user Genesis user like you too. He was completely new to Starfield modding and spent 8 months creating it. Let that be your motivation. But at the same time, we’re not expecting a city. Small stuff like crashed ships, rebel bases, imperial facilities, homes for players, boss locations, etc are what we’re looking for too. And you’re not just limited to unaltered planets. You can go add a new location to Tatooine or even Coruscant if you want to. This is what I mean when I say the possibilities are endless. This is an open-ended volunteer project where you’ll have vague assistance from us but you’ll mostly be on your own. It will be both challenging and fun, but mostly rewarding. I look forward to seeing what you all create.
Voice Actors
Star Wars Genesis primarily uses ElevenLabs AI to generate required voiceliness. We currently do not need voice actors unless you are willing to do extra work beyond just submitting voicelines. As it stands, there is only 1 person (DeityVengy) doing implementation, which involves mapping out dialogue trees, linking them to their game ID, and then writing the new story/dialogue. None of the above requires modding experience but it is a very time consuming process. If you are willing to assist with implementation, then please refer to the two sections underneath this, where you may gain the opportunity to voice the NPC that you are mapping.
Writers
We currently only need writers for vanilla side quest rewriting, which requires you to map out all relevant conversations and dialogues from the quest into a spreadsheet and then write the replacement for each dialogue in that same spreadsheet. We have a specific format you must follow for this. There’s all sorts of side quests from short 10-20 minute ones to hour long ones out there. You are free to pursue any of them as long as you get the plot you’re planning approved by me (DeityVengy). Please message me or @ me in the Discord.
Voiceline Implementation
There’s multiple ways you can assist in voiceline implementation:
- In the spreadsheet, there is a tab for Misc. Voicelines. That is where I jot down random vanilla voicelines I ran into while I was doing something else. Most of these are low priority and usually just 1-3 lines, but there will always be stuff to do and if there isn’t, I’ll personally give you more. You will need to use AI for this to clone the voice since you are only replacing a few lines of an NPC that may have hundreds/thousands of lines.
- If you do not want to do any writing and just want to make our lives easier, you can map out vanilla conversations with NPCs or even entire quests for us in the spreadsheet. We would then go in and rewrite the conversation later and then obtain the voicelines. Simply make a new tab in the spreadsheet for the quest/NPC you’re mapping out, There’s tons of vanilla voicelined stuff all around Genesis but if you can’t find any, just let me know and I’ll assign you one.
- If you don’t want to do any writing and are a voice actor, you can obtain the VA role in the Discord and wait for requests/announcements. You will be given a folder full of named voice files or a link to a spreadsheet tab for an NPC. You will then be required to record lines, name/edit them properly matching the names in the folder/spreadsheet, and then send it back.
- Beyond the two above, there is an option to do the entire implementation and voicelines for a quest/NPC from start to finish. That is what I do and that is what previous Genesis founders have done like Luigi and droc. Together, we’ve replaced over 30,000 voicelines using this method. There is a place for AI and real VAs here. If a VA is involved, the scope is a bit larger. Something that involves replacing like 10-20 voicelines will now involve replacing that entire NPCs voicelines which may be in the hundreds due to the difference in voice. That is the advantage of AI, but we will respect anyone that chooses not to use it, as long as the work is of quality.
Note: If you are generating AI voicelines for the first time, I will need to do a quality check based on a few samples. Contrary to popular belief, generating proper sounding AI voicelines has it’s own learning curve. You have to train it properly, code in delays, make it emphasize certain words, etc. And even then, you may have to regenerate the same line 20+ times to get a proper sounding one. In regards to voice actors that are inserting themselves into an ingame NPC, I’ll need a few samples from you too.
Ship Building
Star Wars Genesis has it’s own Ship Vendor and Ship Building framework. This allows users to create and submit their own ships to Genesis. You can learn more about it on the mod page for it, where you’ll find a tutorial along with the necessary requirements.
Companions
If you want to make a standalone Star Wars companion, go for it. If it’s good, it’ll be added to Genesis. To make it easier for yourself, you can use a well done companion mod on Nexus or Creations as a template for your companion. Obviously for permission and stolen work sake, you’ll need to completely change the appearance of the companion and every single voiceline, but it’ll save you a lot of time with the initial setup.
Misc. Volunteer Work
If you keep your eye on the volunteer thread of the Discord, you may catch some small volunteer projects there too. This ranges from re-textures to just scouting out stuff for a future mod, such as gathering a list of vanilla voicelines in a specific location which requires 0 modding experience.
