General Performance Guide
Incompatible Apps
The most important thing you should do is make sure there are no applications running on your PC that are known to cause issues with Genesis. You can find a list of these incompatible applications here.
Menu Lag
The most common performance issues among borderline minimum requirement GPUs is “menu lag”. It is when you launch your game with normal fps, play normally, but then when you pause the game, your FPS dips to like 10 and STAYS that way. Since this is a hardware limitation related to your GPU’s VRAM, there is no ultimate “fix” for this besides upgrading your GPU, but there are steps you can take to reduce it. Refer to the Menu Lag Fixes page for more information.
Audio Stuttering
Both Starfield and Star Wars Genesis should be installed on an internal SSD. Neither should be on an external SSD or an HDD, or else you will experience a wide variety of issues, such as audio/music cutting in and out and extremely long loading screens. If you are sure that they are both installed on an internal SSD, then it may be dying. You can easily check the health of yours by installing an app called Crystal Disk.
Infinite Loading – Crashing Upon Starting New Save – Crashing Upon Entering Cities
When antivirus, permission issues, and lingering mods have been ruled out, the most probable cause for these issues is hardware defects. It is not simply a hardware limitation, as people well below minimum specs using Steam Decks or a 6 GB VRAM GPU are able to play Genesis, albeit at a very low framerate. I understand that it may sound like convenient scapegoat to just conclude you have a hardware defect, but please understand that Genesis has had over 90k+ unique users, and many of those users have found out these exact issues were related to a hardware defect. I want to make it clear that the Genesis Discord is not a tech support center for faulty PCs. However, at the very least, I can at least point you towards the right direction.
- If you can’t even start a new save, then please download this Test Save and place it in your C:\Users\xxx\Documents\My Games\Starfield\Saves folder and attempt to load into it.
- If you aren’t even able to load into that save, then we can rule out a hardware issue for now, as that sounds more like an antivirus/permissions issue.
- If you are able to successfully load into it but crash upon traveling into Coruscant or any other major city, then this confirms you have some sort of hardware issue. Please refer to the bulletpoints below.
- RAM: If you frequently experience other apps crashing on your PC, then your RAM may be dying. Some users have reported that turning XMP in BIOS stabilized their PC temporarily.
- SSD: A dying SSD may cause a wide variety of issues. Luckily, you can easily check the health of yours by installing an app called Crystal Disk.
- Drivers: Corrupted GPU drivers are always a possibility, but unless you’re having weird issues in other games, I don’t recommend reinstalling them.
- Temperatures: An overheating CPU along with other system parts will cause instability. I recommend downloading the HWiNFO application and checking your temps while the game is running. If the game doesn’t run at all, then try running a PC benchmark.
Blue Screens and System Crashes
Under no circumstances should any game or modlist cause your computer to blue screen or completely shut off. That is 100% a hardware issue.
